i am thankful...really
I am thankful that I have a roof over my head and a job to support me.
I am thankful [sometimes] that I have friends who care enough to keep caring.
I am thankful for Olivia Vayne.
I am thankful for the Louisiana Purchase, because my parents sure as hell weren't French. Otherwise, I probably would have grown up in Virginia. Or Ohio. Blech.
I am thankful for fedora hats.
I am thankful that I have the money to afford fedora hats.
I am thankful [sometimes] that I have money.
I am thankful that I am in good health and that those I love are in good health [mostly].
I am thankful for literacy.
I am thankful for trees.

This feels so fifth grade. Are you happy, Olivia?

~You mean THAT vice president?
Aaaaaa so many things I need to do all piling up all of a sudden. :OO IT'D HELP IF I'D STOP SLEEPING TOO MUCH
I had weird horrible nightmares for half of last night, then had strangely complex dreams afterwards involving a strange RPGcast that included a teen Otacon, Huey Dewey and Louie, I THINK Strago, and probably some other people that I can't recall right now? ANYWAY IT WAS VERY STRANGE

I went to Alix's apartment to see what it was like the past few days and also to play Shadow Complex, since Alix has been on my case to play that for ages since it is apparently just like Super Metroid. AS ANYONE WHO'S KNOWN ME FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME KNOWS, I HAVE A VERY DEEP AND ABIDING LOVE FOR METROID so I was intrigued by this.

And true enough, Shadow Complex is very much like Super Metroid in terms of the system. The map system works on the same basic square setup as Super Metroid, which ?s for squares that have secrets and all that, and the upgrades to your dude follow the same basic pattern
Bombs -> Grenades
Ice Beam -> Foam
Speed Boots -> Friction Reducer
Missiles -> Missiles
And you can wall jump, sort of. But that's kind of where the similarity ends for me.

Shadow Complex focuses on a guy. Well no wait, let me do this correctly. Shadow Complex starts with you controlling a black dude in a super suit. There's a shootout, some ridiculous evil person says he killed the vice president, your black dude seems mildly inconvenienced by this, cue title.
Game actually starts, and who are you? SOME RANDOM WHITE GUY, WHAT A SURPRISE. I for one am shocked, shocked. I haven't beaten the game yet but the black dude has apparently vanished into the ether, never to be seen or mentioned again. Perhaps he will be the final boss or something.
Anyway your main guy is some white hipster douchebag who's so bland and unlikable that I'm not sure he has a name, or if he even has a name, I don't care what it is. He has a girlfriend. GUESS WHAT HAPPENS TO HER. IF YOU GUESSED SHE GETS KIDNAPPED SO HE HAS TO RESCUE HER, YOU WERE RIGHT!
She also gets beaten up so she can't walk, so you have to leave her behind in hiding and continue on without her after you rescue her. But then she gets kidnapped again, oh no! But then you rescue her again. And then she leaves, but you stay because you have ~unfinished business~.

where could this be going??? )

OH YEAH by the way guys if you try and friend me on Steam, let me know who you are. :O I DON'T KNOW WHAT WEIRD ALIASES PEOPLE USE ON STEAM MAN
also i wouldn't friend me hoping for scintillating conversation or a way to finally get around my avoidance of any kind of chat program, since i'm usually doing something that makes me less than chatty with a few exceptions. SPEAKING OF WHICH, SORRY IF I DON'T REPLY TO THINGS VERY QUICKLY

Need to do those christmas cards and that filler art, fix Fallout and work on that thing, finish that comic plotline I've had half-finished for like two weeks, did I owe someone a request or something? I think some chick wanted me to draw her Sue, I could do a quick boatchibi in oC or something. I really need to learn how to say no to people someday. AH WELL, IT'LL MAKE HER HAPPY

Also I have fallen in love with this song. It's very Postal Service, if you've heard any of their stuff. I LIKE BOOPY SYNTHPOP LIKE THIS SHUT UP

Man I've felt so shaky and tense lately, idk what that's about. I feel like there was something else I wanted to talk about but I can't remember it now. Ah well.

HEY EVERYONE HELP ME DECIDE WHICH MOVIE I WANT TO WATCH
HARRY BROWN

PROS

  • Michael Caine.
  • Morally-grey action hero old men.
  • Look, it's Michael Caine. My gay for him has known no limit since I first realised that the torture sequence in The IPCRESS File was turning me on. I would pay money to see Michael Caine standing in a room for ninety minutes, occasionally striking a pose.
  • Harry Brown played by Michael Caine = Harry Palmer played by Michael Caine? So much potential conspiracy theory.
  • People are comparing it to Westerns.
  • .......In conclusion, Michael Caine.

CONS

  • According to Rotten Tomatoes, the politics are seethingly Daily Mail. I HAD A MASSIVE RANT HERE WHICH MENTIONED EVERYTHING FROM MGS-VERSUS-SPLINTER CELL TO INGLOURIOS BASTERDS AND DERAILED INTO FOAMING POLITICS BUT IT WAS LIKE TEN PAGES WRONG AND TOTALLY BORING. It basically can be summed up as - "I don't really like it when the moral of a movie is totally, obnoxiously different to my own morals, usually, unless there are awesome cowboys in the movie, or if it's just really cool, or if the writer quickly acknowledges the other side and then just derails into a pile of reactionary foaming and the movie's pretty good".

Now, I could write about how this doesn't apply to every movie, but then I look at Rotten Tomatoes and see reviews like -

Harry Brown could easily have been scripted by the staff of the Daily Mail with a helping hand from Jeremy Kyle.

    and

The youthful villain demographic, plus the prompts to our indignation, come straight from the UK tabloids. But before it spins into terminal hokum, Barber’s feature debut has moments of power and menace.

and also this screed in the Daily Muslim Immigration House Prices Cancer:

It's even politically correct, studiously side-stepping issues of race or immigration... Harry Brown is bound to attract panning reviews from critics who will complain that it is a hysterically overwrought reaction to our broken society - as, indeed, it is. Most hoodies are not the irredeemable monsters that they are here, and a victimised pensioner would have other avenues to explore before turning to vigilante violence.

Look, if even the BLOODY DAILY MAIL thought it was too reactionary -

Compared to the art-house and liberal The White Ribbon, Harry Brown adopts a more conservative, braver, more realistic approach, and one that will earn them the undying hatred of all right-minded (in other words, Left-leaning) critics. Not me. ...Harry Brown is not a great film, but it is an important one, with messages we ignore at our peril.

    ....Gaaaah.

And even the EXPRESS thought the film was too conservative. WE ARE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS HERE, PEOPLE.

BASICALLY THIS CAN ALL BE SUMMED UP WITH 'I WANT TO SEE THIS MOVIE, BUT AM NOT SURE I CAN STAND TO SEE SOMEONE TALKIN' BOUT MY G- GENERATION LONG ENOUGH TO ENJOY BASKING IN MICHAEL CAINE'S TOTAL AMAZING'.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

PROS:

  • Interesting premise!

CONS:

  • I will either find it way too scary or not scary enough. I ain't usually afraid of no ghosts, probably because my mother (a believer in them) used to tell me about the ghosts she'd seen as a child and as a young woman, when I was a little girl. I guess I associate them with peacefulness and sadness and calm because that was the way she always used to make them sound - people lost on their way to wherever else. The scariest thing to me, though, is insanity, the reams of pantwetting fear curled up inside your brain where just the right shock will uncoil them. I had nightmares for WEEKS after reading that Bad Trip story on Erowid about the Upsquadomatic Peels. Even now I can't think of it without wanting to cry.

TL;DR IF PARANORMAL ACTIVITY HAS A 'MAYBE YOU'RE JUST CRAZY' INTERPRETATION I WILL FIND IT A LOT MORE FRIGHTENING.

The Informant!

PROS:

  • Love the premise
  • Supposedly really good
  • Supposedly funny

CONS:

  • Matt Daaaaamon

Last year I was so excited to do this again, and then I got knocked on my butt by the flu. I still have the gifts I was gonna send out, and I intend on sending them out this year. Better late than never, right? Here's to hoping everyone still has the same address.

My name is Casey and I'm 22.

1. Cards, especially ones with stuff on them, like glitter, sequins, feathers, etc.

2. Anything in French or relating to French/Francophone culture. My #1 request is a pen pal that can write to me in French. I've been studying it for a while now and I'm having a lot of issues still. I think I need real-world practice.

3. Magical realism novels. When I became an English major I stopped reading for pleasure. How sad is that? I'd like to start again. I like modern fantasy. Used is 101% fine with me. Used books = loved books

4. Earrings. My favorite thing about this community every year is sending earrings all over and getting then from all over.

5. Wrapping paper. I'm obsessed with it. I won't complain if it's folded. I just love seeing a variety of paper under the tree. The larger the section the more likely I can wrap something with it, but if you can only send me a 4"x4" square then you can bet I can find a thimble to wrap.

6. Please donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. My roommate and close friend is currently dealing with it, and I had to watch as his girlfriend, my other roommate, was genuinely afraid she'd lose him the last time he was hospitalized. He told me he was lucky enough to have a more manageable form of it. I can't imagine how much the unlucky ones suffer.

7. Nail polish colors you don't like or think you'll never use again. I mix my own colors.

8. Mixed CDs. Send me whatever you can't get out of your head, or whatever you want to get the word out about. I especially love epic instrumental music, like the Trans Siberian Orchestra's "Carol of the Bells," Nine Inch Nails' "Just Like You Imagined" or the music Clint Mansell makes for movie trailers. But as I said, I'd love to be surprised.

9. Ornaments. I'm having my very own tree for the first time this year, but I have no ornaments for it!

10. Anything I can eat, especially odd, regional foods.

Where to Send )

Thanks you to everyone who has ever sent me anything and to those of you that plan on sending me something now. If you plan on sending me something, please post your wish list as a response to this post. You don't have to tell me what you're sending, though. I love surprises.

*waves* Hello from Ontario, Canada!
And I'm a new member who just found the community. :D :D You all ROCK!

I hate making Christmas lists because they are SO BLOODY DIFFICULT TO FIGURE OUT.

ANYWAYS: My name is Christina, aka evilvillan_1, and I'm from Ottawa, Ontario (Canada). I'm 23, and currently in university. I have one undergrad degree in psychology. I am disabled (wheelchair user!) and I currently own three rats and a bunny rabbit.

And I am a complete softie. I had a nice chat with Santa but I forgot to ask for what I wanted!! I wished him a Merry Christmas instead and told him he was looking quite good for his age. ;)

Down to business...

1. My current LJ paid user account expires in a few months. LJ has saved my sanity on countless occassions and I don't want the account to lapse. But being a student = NO MONEY. Oopsies.

2. Something for my three rugrats + bunny. Can be a hammock, toys, treats, tube, or a gift certificate to a place like PetsMart... I just want them to have a good holiday season!

3. Donation to the Ecumenical Chaplaincy at Carleton University (my university). The Chaplaincy has been my home away from home for five years, and has quite literally saved my life. They're run completely through donations from individual donors, churches and a few Protestant denominations. http://www.carleton.ca/ecumenicalchaplaincy/support.html

4. Rat-centered icons/avatars or whatever you want to call them. I've taken pictures of my three boys, but I completely fail at doing anything artistic or creative. So sadly all of my current icons are NOT of my rugrats, just found on the internet!! I have pictures on my LJ account, and I'd be thrilled with people's creativity to show the world how much I love those fuzzbutts.

5. Religious knick-knacks. I'm baptized Roman Catholic as of this past Easter, but I was "Protestant" before that... I just like random things like crosses and books and religious relics or prayer cards of things of that nature. I'm being deliberately vague since I'm not sure WHAT I want just that you can never have too much "God". :P (I'm also pretty liberal, so things that make a person laugh amuses me greatly. Even if it's something heretical according to some :P)

6. Postcards/cards to add to my evergrowing collection. I have saved up quite a few over the past few years and I love going through them sometimes and remembering the fond memories. I also like to learn about different places around the globe!!

7. Donations to:
- Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. They've let me volunteer there, I've done co-operative education there as a highschool student, AND I've been a patient there. Basically, they're completely awesome. http://www.cheofoundation.com/ That's the website you're directed to when donating to CHEO (CHEOs main website is: www.cheo.on.ca/)
AND/OR
- Ottawa Humane Society. I adopted a rat from these people, unfortunately it didn't work out for me since the rat was rat-aggressive :S But they're still wonderful and could always use donations. https://www.ohsre.ca/SSLPage.aspx?&pid=193 (main site: http://www.ottawahumane.ca/)
AND/OR
- TWLOHA (To Write Love on Her Arms) Advocacy and education of self-injury, suicide and depression. All of which I've dealt with in my lifetime and I know these people do good work in trying to help others. http://www.twloha.com/

8. BOOKS. I love books. I like psychology, murder mystery, psychological thrillers, spiritual books, religious books, science fiction and some classics (like Catch 22 etc)... I like Stephen White, Dan Brown, Steven King, Jonathan Kellerman, James Patterson, John Sandford, Patricia Cornwell, Lisa Gardner, Robin Cook, John Saul, Fyodor Dostoyvesky, Stephenie Meyer, Mitch Albom, Peter Kreeft...

9. More donations:
-> Gifts of Hope www.plancanada.ca/hope2009 buy an animal or something in my name and send me the card saying what you got :)
-> CARE Canada http://care.ca/
-> Hero Rat http://www.herorat.org/ They train rats to do mine detection!
-> Kiva http://www.kiva.org/ a "living loan" of money that keeps giving back!

10. Stuffed animals - I've got a collection going, I love dogs (especially beagles), holstein cows (the black and white spotted ones), bunny rabbits and of course rats/mice!!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and lotsa love!! <3

Writer's Block: Places to Lay Your Head

How many different places (cities, houses, apartments, dorm rooms, etc.) have you lived in? Which is your favorite? And your least favorite?

View 503 Answers

Hattiesburg, MS (city I was born in, lived in an apartment)

Somewhere in AL, I think Adamsville (not sure)

Titusville, FL (four houses over many years--parents' and mom's)

Great Lakes NTC, IL (Navy boot camp)

Sarasota, FL (apartment, then dad's house, then house I rented a room in with Dayne, then back to my dad's, then renting the whole house from earlier--but this time with Chris, then back to my dad's)

Fort Wainwright, AK (on-post housing, with Chris)

Ideally, our next PCS is to somewhere in the Southeast, and then (if we decide to in the meantime, and it's been on my brain for the better part of the past year) move to Australia.

Hi, everybody. I'm Kim from Illinois, a library technician, substitute teacher's aid, book nerd and comic geek. This is my fourth year participating in this comm, and it only gets better every year. My e-mail address is kgyorkos(at)gmail(dot)com if anyone needs to contact me about something on my list.

1. The courage to get my MLS. I've been working at my city's public library for five and a half years. When I was in high school I briefly entertained the idea of getting my library degree but ultimately decided to get my bachelor's in English when I went to college. I love working at my library and so getting my MLS seems like the next step. I just need the motivation to get off my butt and do it.

2. Bookmarks. It always seems like I have more books than I have bookmarks. Any kind are welcome, although I do prefer tasseled bookmarks with no beads or fobs on the tassels.

3. Skeleton keys. I've been collecting skeleton keys for about six years. I use them as keychain fobs, and the smaller ones make very nice bookmark fobs.

4. Monmouth College memorabilia. I'm an alumnus of Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL (Class of 2004, baby!), and it's a place that's very near and dear to my heart. Even if you're just a fellow alum who would like to share a memory or two of your time at MC, I'd love to hear it.

5. Sheet music for clarinet. I still have the clarinet I got in middle school, and I'd like to play it up again. But old IMEA scales and a couple memorized songs just don't cut it. If you've got sheet music you don't want anymore or you can just scan and e-mail, I'd welcome it.

6. Anything from my Amazon Wish List.

7. Gift cards; Barnes & Noble, Best Buy and iTunes are all equally good.

8. Adventures in Odyssey. For those unfamiliar with it, Adventures in Odyssey is a Christian-themed radio program produced by Focus on the Family that's been going strong for 20+ years. Anything related to it, I'm interested in.

9. Recommendations for religious fiction. I'm a fan of Brock & Bodie Thoene's A.D. Chronicles, so anything along the lines of religious historical fiction is good.

10. Donate to Hands Helping Haiti, an non-profit organization dedicated to the sponsorship and education of Haiti's children. Our church has been supporting of this organization for the past year and a half, including helping to raise money towards the construction of a new school in the area of Savannette. It's a wonderful mission that I'm glad to be a part of.

Okay I am a few weeks behind on the Daily Show because I have been stupidly busy. I just watched the episode from November 11, 2009 with the correspondent Josh Gat who I can't remember seeing before.

What is everyone's take on him?

Also, is there anyone who is watching it on Comedy Central's website who now hates Blackberrys and the song "All You Need Is Love"?

A GUY ON A NUN ON A DONKEY ON A HORSE!
Hello people!

Dad woke me up at about 10:30 today.

I took a shower right quick and went to the kitchen to hang with dad. He was listening to music and we just chilled for a while. Then he started cleaning out the closet in the foyer and I did the dishes. I spent a couple hours looking at online colleges today. And I've been checking out criminal justice degrees. OMG, you guys, I found the coolest-sounding criminal justice degree EVER. The classes sound amazing! :D

Unfortunately, it's only for the last two years of the Bachelors degree, so I'd have to get my Associates somewhere else, then transfer. SO, that's what I'm gonna do. Dad and I made a quick run to the grocery store to pick up some stuff for tonight's dinner. I did some laundry when we got back, then looked at online schools some more. We've kinda just been hanging out today. We watched TV for a while, including Grounded for Life.

Title of this post is from that, of course. Um, let's see, mom came home around 5:30 and we had tacos for dinner. They were SO GOOD. Oh my goodness, lol. I went out to the living room to lay down by our fireplace oven thingy cuz I was cold, and I heard mom and dad talking about financial issues. Dad's been getting unemployment for a while now, but the benefits might end on Sunday and he doesn't have a job, still. He's looking, but it's hard, ya know?

And mom hates her job cuz her bosses haven't got the slightest clue how to run a business. I'm about to change schools and move back home which means they're gonna have to start paying for me again until I can get a job. I just hate this. I wish there was something I could do, but I don't know what (other than get a job ASAP). Anywho, after that, we gathered in the living room and watched Christmas With the Kranks, which we love, so that was fun.

That's about it and Firefox keeps freezing and shutting down on me, so I wanna finish this up real quick and then go to bed.

Love y'all - Mira/Doc/Kat *meow*

Hi! This is my first year posting to this community and I've been lurking for awhile before I finally managed to put together my list.

I'm 28, disabled due to congenital heart defects, wife and loving mom to two adopted cats.

1.  Mail! I love getting things in the mail besides bills and junk mail. Postcards, Christmas cards, magazines, etc.

2.  Handmade items. I'm an avid crocheter so I love handmade gifts and things.  Just knowing that someone took the time to make you a little something makes it that much more special. I love scarves and fingerless gloves especially. I'm also a huge Star Wars fan and I know this is probably a long shot but if anybody could make me a hand knitted or crocheted Qui-Gon Jinn my muse would be extremely grateful. All Star Wars crocheted or knitted items would be awesome, but that one is way out of my skill level to make. :D

3.  Crochet hooks! Speaking of my favorite hobby, I love getting different types of hooks made out of different materials. The size I work with the most is 5mm / H8.

4.  Stamps! I love making cards for people and I collect Stampabilities stamps. :D

5.  Livejournal friends. :D I always love making new friends. Sometimes the best friendships can be formed out of the blue. :D

6.  Anything from my amazon.com Wish List

7.  Gift Cards! I love Bath and Body Works, Hobby Lobby, Wal-Mart. I shop at those places regularly so I could really use them.

8.  Toys and or treats for my kitties. :D

9.  I know this one's probably a long shot, but an agent or editor to look at my writing. I will be finished with my original novel soon and I would like the chance to pitch it to a professional.

10.  Donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They enabled me to make a wish when I was growing up that meant the world to me. I really would like to be able to return the favor and make another child's dream come true. The amount doesn't matter, every little bit helps those kids.

I co-own a small business with my dad, and our main thing is unique all natural, hand made beef jerky. We have the opportunity to take on a couple of contracts that will help keep our business growing even in this economy, but to do so we need new dehydrators and more trays for our existing ones. Without them, I can't keep up with the demand these contracts would have. As it is, I can barely keep up with the equipment we have now, without the contracts - so those are my biggest wishes this year - a new 1000 watt Nesco dehydrator for my business, and extra trays for our existing cookers.

1) Money towards the cooker I'm saving for OR the cooker itself.
2) Extra trays for our existing cookers.
3) Lifetime memberships to any of the sites on my wishlist - http://fullmoonpixels.com
4) Tube license to any paid pixel membership that I don't already have the license for - you can see which ones I have license for on the memberships page of FMP.
5) Renewals of any of the memberships due to expire - also see the memberships page of FMP for expirations
6) Ram sticks for the computer - I'll have to look and see exactly what type. I'd like 2 more gigs for it.
